The Zoo @ Rookies 7/8/05
So I headed down to Rookie's in Cromwell to check out the new line-up of The Zoo. I've seen The Zoo quite a few times over the past few years and I've always been impressed with Randy's stage presence, as well as his band. Now that he has all new members, I had to check it out.
The most obvious change is that they have a new female lead singer. And I must say she is a great addition to the band. Great presence and an amazing voice (not too hard on the eyes, either). She commanded the stage well when singing and laid back in the groove for those songs she backed. Another great addition is the drummer. Great style and musicianship. It looks as though the former lead guitarist, instead of leaving, has switched to bass and has done so seamlessly. Many guitarists who attempt bass tend to merely play guitar lines on the bass. Not true here. He played like as a seasoned bassist. The new lead guitarist was also very good. All in all, the new line-up is very impressive.
The setlist, unfortunately, was a little too reminiscent of every party band in CT. While they held the crowd's attention, (especially for a stormy night) I would have liked to hear a little more originality in the set. Another aspect I took issue with was the overuse of the band's sequencer. Now, this may sound like a jab but it's not. The reason I took issue is not that it sounded bad. It was that the band is talented enough that they do not need to rely on the sequencer. I'd rather have the raw talent of the band shine through with no additional backing sounds. They truly do not need the sequencer.
I did, however, enjoy myself immensely. From start to finish there was little, if any, dead space in the set. The band kept those who were inebriated enough to dance going all night. I even found myself singing along to more than a few songs I'd be embarrassed to admit here.
Overall, the band continues to prove why they're one of the best party bands in the state. Charismatic stage presence and amazing musicianship abound in the new line-up. I hope to see them again very soon.
